Frequently Answered Questions
What grades does a student-athlete need in 8th grade to play on the Freshman Football team?
To be academically eligible to participate in the athletic program a student-athlete must be passing all classes and have a current GPA of at least 2.0. Academic eligibility will be determined at the beginning of each season by the student-athlete’s academic performance in the previous grading period. Students not meeting the required initial 2.00 GPA will be placed on academic probation through the first FIVE competition weeks as determined by the WIAA. During probation an athlete is expected to practice with the team but not participate in contests.
Does each player need a physical exam and medical insurance to participate?
Yes. All incoming freshman must receive a physical upon prior to registering for entering high school football. Each player must submit a Physical Examination Form (see Tacoma Public Schools Athletics website) signed by a medical authority licensed to give a physical examination, certifying that the participant’s physical condition is adequate for all activities in which the student wishes to participate.
How do I sign up for Freshman football?
On-line registration for football typically opens in mid-July. You will need to complete the on-line process through FINAL FORMS. Once your player completes the online process and uploads a copy of their sports physical into final forms or submits to SHS Athletic Director they will be cleared to practice. Physicals should not be turned into the coaches on the first day of practice. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO COMPLETE THIS PROCESS!
Are there try-outs?
Football is a no-cut sport. Every player that signs-up, completes all required forms and payment, and follows the team rules will be on a team. Unlike youth football, however, there is no playing time requirement.
What activities can 8th grade student-athletes participate in leading up to their first freshman practice?
WIAA rules prohibit the Silas High School coaches from working with the players on football-related training until after Memorial Day.
Where are practices?
Varsity, JV and Freshman team practices are held on the SHS football field.
When are games usually played (days and times)?
PCL Athletics will release Varsity game schedules in July. JV and C-team schedules may release slightly later as schools determine whether they can field teams at those levels. Varsity typically plays all games on Friday nights at 7:00 PM. JV games are on Monday nights. In past seasons, the C-Team (Freshmen) games have been on Wednesday nights.

How many games do we typically play?
Teams will typically play 7 regular season games, but may add a few non-conference games if the schedule permits. The Varsity team can earn playoff seeding and participate in additional games.

Is transportation provided to away games?
Yes. Buses will depart from SHS and return the players back to SHS following the games. All players are expected to ride with the team and coaches on the provided buses.

What equipment/uniform is provided and when is it distributed?
Shoulder pads, helmet, practice pants, thigh/knee/hip/tail pads, practice jersey if needed, and game uniform. Gear will be issued in May for spring ball and team camps in the summer. Equipment will be collected after summer camp and redistributed the first week of pre-season practices in August. Uniforms will be issued shortly prior to the first game.

Is there an attendance policy?
Yes. Players must attend all practices or they will be subject to discipline and potential dismissal from the team.

What can parent(s) do to become more involved?
We encourage all parents to participate in the Football Booster Committee and many volunteer opportunities available throughout the year. Emails will be sent to all player’s parents at least monthly, as well as regular updates to social media (Facebook and Instagram). The Football Booster Committee will hold monthly meetings in the WHS meeting room. All are encouraged to attend. Dates and times can be found on the Football Booster website.
